USMNT & MLS Update

The U.S. Men's National Team (USMNT) and Major League Soccer (MLS) are both making significant headlines as they reach pivotal points in the year. The USMNT is preparing for its Concacaf Nations League quarterfinal series against Jamaica. This marks the competitive debut of Mauricio Pochettino as head coach. The first leg of the series will take place on November 14 in Kingston, Jamaica, followed by the return leg on November 18 at CITYPark in St. Louis, Missouri—a city with deep roots in American soccer history.

Pochettino's selection for the Nations League roster is notably affected by injuries to several key players. The team is missing right-back Sergiño Dest (ACL injury), playmaker Gio Reyna (groin injury), forward Folarin Balogun (shoulder injury), Josh Sargent (post-surgery recovery from a groin injury), and defensive midfielder Tyler Adams, who recently resumed play in the English Premier League after back issues. These absences, especially Adams', alter the midfield dynamic considerably, which Pochettino acknowledged, stating the team will prioritize Adams' long-term health as part of its preparations for the 2026 World Cup.

In terms of attacking options, Pochettino has brought in young talents Ricardo Pepi from PSV Eindhoven and Brandon Vazquez from CF Monterrey. Pepi, who has been performing consistently well in the Netherlands, and Vazquez, known for his physical presence, could offer distinct styles in the forward line. Additionally, Tim Weah, who has been effective with Juventus, is expected to play a significant role, although he is suspended for the first match due to an earlier red card. Alejandro Zendejas and Cade Cowell are also included as options for the winger positions, adding versatility to the attacking setup.

These Nations League games serve as part of a larger strategic build-up for the USMNT’s future, specifically the 2026 World Cup. Pochettino sees these matches as essential for building a "winning mentality," and he aims to refine the team’s approach as he integrates emerging talents and prepares for the next generation of competition.

Meanwhile, the 2024 MLS Cup Playoffs are in full swing, advancing through intense matches that have whittled down the field to eight teams competing for the title. The journey to the final, set for December 7, started with 18 teams from the Eastern and Western Conferences, but recent rounds have seen major upsets. Notably, reigning Supporters' Shield winners Inter Miami, led by Lionel Messi, were eliminated in a close series with Atlanta United in Round One, marking a surprising exit for one of the season's top teams.

In the Eastern Conference, other prominent teams also faced early exits, including defending MLS Cup champions Columbus Crew, who fell to the New York Red Bulls, and third-seed FC Cincinnati, knocked out by New York City FC. This year’s playoffs have emphasized how tightly matched teams are, with penalty shootouts deciding several matchups and underdog teams often prevailing. Atlanta United and NYCFC’s success highlights a strong showing from lower seeds in the East.

Meanwhile, in the Western Conference, LAFC and LA Galaxy have demonstrated dominance, advancing past the first rounds. The Galaxy decisively defeated the Colorado Rapids with high-scoring performances, while LAFC overcame the Vancouver Whitecaps in a hard-fought series. The Seattle Sounders and Minnesota United also moved forward, both showcasing resilience through close games decided by penalties. The ongoing playoff format, a mix of wild card games, and a best-of-three series have contributed to a heightened level of competition this year.

As the competition narrows, the next stage will see LAFC, LA Galaxy, New York Red Bulls, and other high-performing teams aiming to clinch the coveted spots in the conference finals. These matches will not only decide the finalists but also where the MLS Cup final will be held, with the highest remaining seed hosting the ultimate game. This unique home-field advantage raises stakes for teams still in the race, promising exciting matchups ahead as they vie for a chance at the championship.
